To mark the ‘World Environment Day 2013’, the Women’s Environment and Development Desk (WEDD) of the Central Tibetan Women’s Association organized an event based on this year’s theme; Think. Eat. Save. This event was mainly to inform and spread awareness about the impact of food waste on environment and the importance of reduction of food waste.
Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages people to reduce food waste. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.
If food is wasted, it means that all the resources and inputs used in the production of all the food are also lost. The impact of food waste is not just financial. Environmentally, food waste leads to waste of chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides, fuel used for transportation and more rotting food will create more methane, which is one of the most harmful greenhouse gases that contributes to climate change and global warming.
For this event, we organized a public pledge forum where individuals could make a promise to take any small step towards a better environment. Individuals wrote their personal pledges on leaves made from recycled paper and tied it to our ‘Tree of Change’. This event brought together more than 400 participants and inspired within the individuals a sense of responsibility and commitment to help in creating a better environment.
We also stressed on how to make enzyme fertilizer out of fruit skins and explained this procedure to the public.
We received many positive feedback for taking this initiative in spreading awareness regarding world environment.
