TWA starts its 3rd Advanced Tibetan Women’s Leadership Training in New Delhi

Pre event Release:

3rd Tibetan Women’s Advanced Leadership Training

“The progress of a society or a country cannot be measured in terms of its GDP alone. It must be measured in terms of its human development index in which empowerment of women must become the most important yardstick of progress and development.” Shabana Azmi, Indian actress, former parliamentarian and activist made these comments at the launch of a new UN report which paints a devastating picture of the status of women in Afghanistan.

Tibetan Women’s Association is glad to be able to organize the third series of the Tibetan Women’s Advanced Leadership training in New Delhi, Gandhi Peace Foundation, from 18th to 27th December, 2012.

As envisioned by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and an eight point policy outlined by the Kashag (Cabinet) on 14th October, 2008 to empower Tibetan women’s equal participation in the successful establishment of non-violent and democratic Tibetan community, Tibetan Women’s Association is undertaking continuous project to strengthen our struggle and to establish true democratic society.

This leadership training is one of the myriad projects that TWA focus to boost self-esteem and raise self confident to gain more in-depth understanding on concepts for women’s empowerment. So far the training has proven its accomplishment; appreciations and comments that we received from the 1st and 2nd Advance Leadership Training’s speakers and participants were encouragements and acknowledgements of our work.

Moreover, this training has helped many young Tibetan women to shape their future and motivated them to equally partake in administrative and political work of our nation. This year around twenty five young Tibetan women from various part of the India participated in this training and there are graduate students, professionals and working women.

We have professional trainers who have years of experiences in the field to lead the session; Lynda O Lepcha, Irene M Santiago and Tenzin Dhardon Sharling. Lynda O Lepcha is the Director of Holistic Training Solution, New Delhi. Irene M Santiago is Chair and former Chief Executive Officer of the Mindanao Commission on Women and Convener of the Mothers for Peace Movement in the Philippines. In 2005, she was nominated as one of 1000 women for the Nobel Peace Prize. And Tenzin Dhardon Sharling is Member of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile and Co-Chair of the International Tibet Network.

The training will explore the different aspects of leadership; from identifying to building with practical implementation of the skills learned. The highlights included ample practical experiences; exposure trip, event management, lobbying Indian leaders, the panel discussion at India Habitat center with four prominent Indian and Tibetan leaders,  and active participation in the NDTV studio.

We would like to thank the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation, through the Tibet Fund based in the United States, who supported this major venture of TWA with much-needed financial impetus. And the National Endowment for Democracy also provided financial resources.
