Our Team


Our History

The Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) was originally founded on March 12, 1959, in Tibet. On this day – known as Women’s Uprising Day – thousands of Tibetan women from all three provinces of Tibet gathered together in Lhasa to protest against the illegal occupation of Tibet by Communist China. Protesting peacefully outside the Potala Palace, hundreds of these women suffered brutally at the hands of the Chinese troops. They were arrested, imprisoned, tortured, and beaten without trial.

Global Week of Action 2023: Thermofisher Scientific

From 30th January – 5th February 2023,
On the Global Week of Action 2023, the Central Tibetan Women’s Association, stands firmly against Thermo Fisher Scientific for contributing against the law of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for supplying DNA kits and equipment used for genetic surveillance to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) from the Tibetans and Uyghurs without their consent. The association is concerned with such continued act of oppression which violates human law and moral values, urging the world leaders to support and take action now to end the extreme abuses and dictatorship of the PRC.

The Tibetan Women’s Association President acknowledged the warm invitation and attended the inauguration ceremony of the Tibetan National Sports Association’s Tongtsen Football Academy in Dekyiling (Dehradun) to show support and value the Tibetan sports.

India Plans To Build a Hydropower Project

Fearing a Chinese threat of “water wars,” India is considering a plan to build an 11,000 megawatt (MW) hydropower project in Upper Subansiri in Arunachal Pradesh.
China could construct dams on a section of the Brahmaputra River. The river, also known as the Yarlung Tsangbo in China, flows from Tibet into India’s Arunachal Pradesh state and down through Assam to Bangladesh. Indian authorities are concerned that Chinese projects could trigger flash floods or create water scarcity, as well as environmental concerns.

From 29th-31st December 2022,
Central TWA dedicated their time and effort by volunteering for social service alongside other social workers during His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s three days teaching on Nagarjuna’s “Commentary on Bodhichitta” at Kalachakra (Bodhgaya).


China Builds Planetarium in Tibet

China Builds Planetarium in Tibet

China begins work on a planetarium at the “roof of the world” in Tibet.
The planetarium will be built within the Tibet Museum of Natural Sciences in Tibet’s provincial capital, Lhasa. The planetarium, scheduled to be completed in 2024, is expected to receive over 100,000 visitors annually.

Central TWA’s Vice President alongside our important Chief Guest, Ranchi MLA Shri C. P. Singh ji attended the 2days National Meeting for the winter session which was organized by Bharat Tibet Samanvay Sangh at MDLM Hospital & Research Centre, Booti, Ranchi (Jharkhand). A solidarity rally was held at McLeod Main Square, demonstrated by the 5 major NGOs of Dharamshala to affirm support for the Indian armies who ceased incursion carried out by the Chinese armies at the India China Border in Tawang sector, Arunachal Pradesh.

Central Tibetan Women’s Association volunteered for two consecutive days during the 26th Anniversary Celebration of the Himalayan Festival to commemorate the Nobel Peace Prize Conferment on His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama.

In-Solidarity Against China's Dictatorship

On 7th December 2022,

“Don’t want dictatorship, want democracy!”
An act of solidarity was approached at 10:30 am by the 4 Major NGOs of Dharamshala and Australian Political Activists, Mr. Drew Pavlou and Mr. Antony Small, demanding the end to Chinese oppression and its dictatorship towards the people suffering in China and Tibet. The same day at 3 pm, each representative of the 4 NGOs held a meeting with Mr. Pavlou & Mr. Small and exchanged brief introductions & thoughts on the Chinese oppression of the Tibetans in Tibet.

On Wednesday Morning, Central TWA conducted a ritual called Palden Lhamo which is performed every year on October 15, according to the Tibetan calendar.

In the evening from 5-6 pm, Central TWA and RTWA Dharamshala collaboratively organised a candle light vigil at McLeod Ganj Main square in solidarity to the ongoing issues inside China . We thank the participants and the media for their support and unity.

On Friday Morning from 9am, Clean Upper Dharamshala Programme (CUDP) and Planet for Plants & Animals jointly conducted a Clean-Up Day co-operatively participated by 7 major NGOs based in Dharamshala including Central TWA around Jogiwara road, Mcleod Ganj.
