TWA at the 33rd Kalachakra Initiations, Ladakh

June 24th, 2014: Tibetan Women’s Association at the 33rd Kalachakra – educational and social initiatives at the 33rd Kalachakra

Tibetan Women’s Association is at the 33rd Kalachakra initiation with 160 representatives from 27 regional chapters from across India and Nepal; the representatives remain committed in serving the global gathering through various social and educational initiatives. The 33rd Kalachakra initiation is scheduled from 3rd to 14th July, 2014 at the Jewal Tsel ground.

Tibetan Women’s Association Central office approached Ladakh Buddhist Association and the All Ladakh Gonpa Association through Kongpo Association and Jonang Association at the outset showing our interest in taking lead of social initiatives during the 33rd Kalachakra. Our regional chapter based in Sonamling Tibetan settlement consistently met with the main organizers of the 33rd Kalachakra which ultimately resulted in TWA volunteering at the 33rd Kalachakra initiation. The 160 TWA representatives are now part of the listed tasks and committees; security, women help desk, medical, discipline, registration, environment, reception and information centre. The TWA representatives were thoroughly guided by the Sonamling Chief Representative officer, Mr. Dhondup Tashi through various meetings and welcomed the TWA volunteers in presence of the local leaders over a simple tea party.

Considering the effectiveness and extensive reach towards a larger audience, TWA will organize public events that will carry social, political and environmental projects targeting women, children, pilgrims from Tibet, and a cross-section of people. The events titled as “Significance of Women’s Leadership in Democracy”, “Educational talk on women and health”, and “Tibet, the Earth’s Third Pole and its implication on Asia’s Future Sustainability” will have panelists and experts like Mr. Penpa Tsering, Speaker, Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Ms. Dhardon Sharling, Member of Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Ms. Tenzin Palkyi, Assistant Program Officer, Asia, National Endowment for Democracy, Dr. Tsering Lhadol, popularly known as Ama Shema, a well known obstetrician, Amchi Tenzin Lhadon, Tibetan Medicine practitioner, Mr. Chewang Norphel, civil engineer and environmental scientist also known as ice man of Ladakh and Mr. Tenpa Gyaltsen from Environment and development Desk, CTA. TWA has been distributing TWA information kits along the events to advocate the Association and its significance.

Tibetan Women’s Association being a social political NGO, we deem it gratifying and rewarding to be of service to the community and the global gathering at the 33rd Kalachakra. We remain committed to our roots and to our tag line; “Advocacy for home, Actions in Exile”. The Kalachakra is one of the most attended Buddhist teachings, thousands of people (Tibetans and non Tibetans) from all over the world will gather for His Holiness’s teaching.
